Whether you are just going for your first casual game or your first tournament, walking into a game for the first time can be intimidating. Try remembering these quick tips though and you will make that first step as smooth as possible!
1) MODELS
This one is a given, but you need models to be able to play... There are a few words of warning here though.
A term that you will hear a lot in this scene is WYSIWYG (Pronounced: Wi-si-wig) this means 'What You See Is What You Get' and makes the game a HELL of a lot easier for you and your opponent. Make sure that all your models are equipped with the correct weapons or at least give some kind of clear indication to your opponent about what each weapon is supposed to be.
A second point with this also depends on the type of event you are attending, but paint your models! This one is up for debate and in friendly games/events, playing with unpainted models is completely fine. But if this is a tournament or narrative event where other players have invested countless hours into their painting, don't ruin their immersion by putting no effort into your own, it isn't fun for anyone to see a big sea of grey plastic next to an entire painted army.
Equally though, don't panic too much about your painting, it certainly doesn't have to be perfect, a good rule for minimum painting requirements is to include is just 3 base colours:
Your main model base colour (Blues, greens, reds etc)
Blacks, browns or greys (Things such as boots or trousers)
Metals (Guns/swords).
Optional: Basecoat skins with a standard flesh colour.
2) RULES
Also a given, but it is pretty darn difficult to play a game without any kind of ruleset or knowing how your army works at all. Pick up your army's codex and give it a read BEFORE you come to your event. Most experienced players are always happy to teach new people how to play and give tips on your army, but don't expect them to play your entire army for you.
For complete beginners, don't get bogged down in special abilities or stratagems, just try understand what your core units do, their general role on the field and you will be good to go.
3) TOOLS
You might be able to buy most of these things on the day if you do forget them, but it is far easier just to bring them with you.
Dice - You WILL need these. A good tip is to bring maybe two different colours - One for rolling and one to help keep track of wounds
A tape measure - Don't just assume you know how far 6'' is. It's not as big as you think...
A copy of your list - Make sure you know what your army is made of and bring a printed or digital copy with you, if you haven't already, download the Battlescribe app.
A can do attitude - This is the ABSOLUTE BIGGEST thing you can bring to any wargaming event. Don't be an unsociable grouch or a general asshole. Always keep in mind that your opponents have been willing to give up their own luxury time to be here too. Don't ruin their day or anyone else.
Deodorant - You know what I mean. If you are someone who struggles with their smell, please for the love of god bring some deodorant or some kind of cleaning product. We are all for immersion and think that followers of Nurgle are great, but keep it in the fluff, not everyone else noses.
Outside of that, you will be good to go! Go enjoy yourself and make some great friends who share this wonderful hobby!
