How To Beat Painter's Block

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

We’ve all been there…

...No matter what you seem to do, the more you hate your army colour scheme and every time you reach for your paints, an overwhelming sense of dread floods over you.

Okay, perhaps that’s a bit extreme, but the point still stands! If you are feeling the strain of painters block, here are a few quick tips to help you get yourself back on track and ready to create an army that YOU can be proud of.

Switch it up!

If you’ve been painting the same army for a while, you might find yourself feeling like a little bit of a robot… First I do the red, then the black, then the metals, then the flesh, then the wash, then the highlights etc…

If you find yourself taking on the task of painting a large army, and doing the same scheme over and over with no end in sight, chances are, you are not going to be in the most creative of mindsets.

To make sure you’re keeping your painting exciting, when you feel the boredom setting in, take a step back from that army and branch over to a different side project, perhaps you’ve always wanted to paint Tzaangors? Or have your own badass Necromunda gang? Pick up a box and go to work!

Then, by the time you come back to your original army, you’ll be looking at it with fresh eyes once again!

Learn a new technique

Similar to the first point, but if you find you are painting everything in the same manner, try adding a new technique into the mix!

Ever tried fine line edging? Or tried to replicate moving liquid? How about the impossible task of non-metallic metals?

There will always be something that you haven’t mastered just yet, so try to introduce some new techniques into your painting, when you see the progress you’ve been making, you’ll definitely be feeling inspired once again!

Look for some inspiration

Instagram is easily the best tool for this. Just looking up the #Warhammer or #GamesWorkshop tags will send your mind into a whirlwind of excitement, envy and inspiration! Seriously, I can’t count the number of times I’ve been feeling tired of my painting schemes only to check Instagram, see something I love and see how I can try doing something new with my own minis!

So there you have it, If you need some more painting inspo, try these tips and I PROMISE, you’ll be ready to pick up your brushes and get back to slapping on some colour!
