We've all felt the cruel sting of a 'quick look around' to your local hobby shop... What started out with such good intentions for a small pot of paint, soon turns into an entirely new army and before you know it, you're broke for the rest of the month.
If you're looking to not spend the rest of the month living on budget beans, here are a few ways around those prices!
First the worst, second (hand) the best!
Sites like Ebay or Facebook Marketplace truly are life savers here. The second hand market is EASILY the best and cheapest way to get hold of your models. During my time at university, I don't think I had brought a single model first hand... Accumulating sizeable Tau, Drukhari and Crimson Fists forces all through the wonders of online shopping.
There are of course a few things to watch out for here.
Firstly, watch the price, for second hand, pre-painted miniatures, a good rule of thumb is paying no more than 50% standard retail price. If you're going to have to be stripping the models of the previous paint jobs, you'll find yourself quickly putting in the time and money that it would have been easier to just buy for retail price.
Secondly, check your sellers. This is just good general advice anyway, always do a check on your sellers to make sure you're not buying just a box (seriously, it happens) or just a backpack for your chaplain.
Splitting the bill
Want to start a Stormcast Eternals army and have a friend who seems interested in ghosts and ghouls? Why not share a box of Soul Wars? This is not only a great way to start your new army, but also a great motivator to keep scratching your hobby itch as you and your friend build your armies alongside another!
Visit your local
Last but not least, if you are looking for acheaper way to get first hand miniatures for discounted prices, I cannot recommend heading down your FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store) enough before trying the options above! Almost all of these stores sell GW, Malifaux, Infinity miniatures for around 10%+ off of retail. Not only that, but these are the best places to meet likeminded gamers who are looking to meet new friends, have great chats and start playing more games!
